Sean "Cheeks" Galloway Class

Cheeks Week 8 - Corrections

i

Sooooooo, this week is SUPPOSED to be color choices, but because I'm a big ol' dumby who misunderstood the assignment LAST week, Sean gave me and some others a chance to pick up the slack from last week this week IN ADDITION to the color. So we're creating 3 new backgrounds and character poses from scratch, and coloring one of the 3.

I won't point out the name of the other genius (COUGH COUGH COUGH), but needless to say, we've got double the work to do this week, and I won't be coloring this one anytime soon. But it's definitely on the to-do list.

However, I DO love the 3 concepts for each character I've come up with. This one is based off an idea Sean threw out for my critique on how to improve this field background. The angle is much more interesting for the scene I wanted to depict.

Cheeks Week 8 - Corrections 2

Third background and pose!

Wasn't supposed to color another, but I did wanna tone it so that the sliced through wall would read well. After toning it, I ended up slapping a gradient on a layer, set to color, and toned down the opacity. I liked the result! Peil's lunging at some poor average Stormtrooper. Sucks to be that trooper!

Cheeks Week 8 - Color

i

SO. This is my piece for the color portion of this week.

I'm not sure what Sean is going to say about this one. Sean took us through his color schemes, and while I think it works for him, my coloring is really different. He likes to use saturation to focus on characters, but I do other things!

My thought process here is that since the disguised Rodian Jedi "Pointy", as he's affectionately been nicknamed, is on the seedy underworld moon Nar Shaadda. It's filled with lot's of bright neon-type lights, and destaturating the background simply wasn't working. So I let the lights tell the story. The building lights, highlights, hologram, and stroke around Pointy help the eye to keep moving around the piece. I also refrained from the use of texture and noise on Pointy to help him pop out a bit more. Finally, I did my best to keep the composition circular so that the eye wouldn't get too stuck. And YES, that's a wanted poster for fellow Jedi-on-the-run, Peil! While I still think this panel needs a little work, I have to throw in the towel for now and move on to background 3.

Cheeks Week 7 - Putting It Together

i

WEEK 7 AHHHHHH. Two to go!

Enjoyed this one too. While I didn''t get to make too many corrections from past weeks, I took it upon myself to make a lot of color changes for the old backgrounds, and color the poses from the previous weeks. I also added a "Peil in bed" pose just because none of the others fit the indoor background. His pose is a little wonky...but I like the colors, at least!

Basically, I just didn''t have all the time I needed to knock this one out of the park (on top of my usual crazy schedule, New York just got 17 inches of snow over the past two days! LOTS OF SHOVELING) . I was unable to go back and make all the corrections to the character poses and backgrounds that Sean suggested (except for background 1, I made all the changes he suggested back in week 2!).

GO SEE SEAN'S WORK, YOU SILLY WEINER.

Cheeks Week 6 - Expressions 1

i

WEEK 6!! AHHH!! The fun is almost to a close. =( This is part 1 of 3. We have to come up with three expressions for each of the 3 characters we've been working on so far, and then take those three and exaggerate them further. From left to right: Content/Happy, Annoyed/Angry, and Worried/Afraid. I thought these would be a good exercise for Boi since I've drawn him mostly content, so it was kinda cool to see him with opposite extreme expressions! Peil and Pointy to follow soon! Cheeks Week 6 - Expressions 2

i

This is part 2 of 3. We have to come up with three expressions for each of the 3 characters we've been working on so far, and then take those three and exaggerate them further. For this one, I decided to draw the extremes first...dunno why! From left to right: Furious/Angry, Totally Exhausted/Fatigued, and FREAKING OUT/Alarmed. This one was tough! I had a lot of cool ideas to make Pointy's face really expressive but had a tough time. I tried to make his snout, bulb eyes, antennas, and ears really change a lot. ON A SIDENOTE: I realize the position of the head against the bodies are boring for the extremes. To save time, I drew the same shoulders/torso and duplicated it for 6 of them. This way, I could focus my time on the expressions. Peil should hopefully be up tonight! You can check out Sean "Cheeks" Galloway's phenomenal work here.

Cheeks Week 6 - Expressions 3

i

This is part 3 of 3. We have to come up with three expressions for each of the 3 characters we've been working on so far, and then take those three and exaggerate them further. From left to right: Content/Happy, Alarmed/Freaked Out, & Angry/OMG PISSED OFF SITH EYES! This was probably the quickest and easiest set, but I still had a flippin BLAST doing it. I think the Sith Eyes expression needs a little work, but other than that, I'm really happy with the other 5. I'll have to see what Sean thinks! Any suggestions in the meantime? That's all for this week's assignment, folks! You can check out Sean "Cheeks" Galloway's phenomenal work here.

Cheeks Class - Piel 1

i

Peil in alternate costume! I like this one because he's got modified Senate Commando armor. The senate is what he's fighting to protect after Order 66, so I thought that was a cool little addition. More to come soon! Full assignment here.

Cheeks Class - Boi 1

i

Boi pose # 1 colored! I have so much fun coloring him, he's easily my favorite color palette out of all my Star Wars characters. THIS is the pose I've been itching to draw him in, since I based his entire character design and personality after Buddha. More to come soon! Full assignment here.

Cheeks Class 5 - Posing

i

Week 5: Posing - We need to do 3 exaggerated poses, 3 calmer/relaxed poses, and one interactive pose. Naturally, the interacting pose is some poor clone getting his arm sliced off. Expect to see these colored over the next few days! You can check out Sean "Cheeks" Galloway's phenomenal work here.

Cheeks Class 4 - Character 1

i

WEEK 4: So we have to design 2 characters and one room using props so that when you look at the character, you know exactly who/what they are. We also have to design a room made up of props too so you can tell what kind of character resides in it. The second character has to be a postal worker, or delivery person of some sort. This will be tough for me! The other character is anything we want. So, as you can probably tell (even though there's a title), we have a Twi'lek bar waittress here. Or at least, I hope you can tell! I feel like the tray with booze should be the giveaway.... Anyway! She'll be making a brief appearance in my upcoming comic. I thought it would be a good opportunity to flesh her out AND to draw girls. I suck at drawing chicks, so it's a great opportunity for Cheeks to really help me out with that hopefully! Hope you guys like her! And to anyone that doesn't like her waist: I don't care! XD

Cheeks Class 4 - Character 2

i

WEEK 4: So we have to design 2 characters and one room using props so that when you look at the character, you know exactly who/what they are. We also have to design a room made up of props too so you can tell what kind of character resides in it. This is the 'postman/delivery' type guy. Not sure how I feel about him, but the assignment is due so far from now that I may take another stab at it later. I like the concept though. Instead of letters, the alien postman delivers holo-messages! Pretty cool, I think! However, I feel like the overall design is just a bit 'meh'. We'll see. Maybe I'll return to it after I do the room assignment, and make some corrections on older ones.

Cheeks Class - SW Char Revised

i

Revision of my Week 1 assignment! For the Rodian Jedi, Sean wanted a more clearly-defined silhouette, so he suggested this great wirey figure. When posing him later on, I'll be sure to keep that square, stubborn feeling with him. Same problem with the blue Jedi, his silouette was a bit mucky and his shoes weren't in the correct perspective. I also decided to give him a bit of a design on his robes. Our last character's pose needed a bit of work too. The head was too low, his right (our left) forearm was too small, his left wrist looked unnaturally tilted, and his left heal's been corrected so that he's balanced -- All suggestions from Cheeks! I think he looks so much better now. So much better that I decided to throw in a cool secondary light source for fun! Loving this class so far!!! And I'm loving watching everyone's crits and seeing their work. It's an honor to learn alongside these artists! Really professional-looking work. Cheeks Class - Background 1

i

INORGANIC BACKGROUND. So I'm submitting this here a bit early. Not sure how loose we're supposed to keep the backgrounds this week, but the other two I submit will be sketchy-ish with some rough flat colors...Anyway. This is Harnaidan, a city on the planet of Muunilinst. You may remember this city from the Genndy Tartakovski Clone Wars series around the time Episode III came out. Part of my Clone Wars story takes place on Muunilinst, so I thought this assignment would be a cool opportunity to do some studies of that location. Cheeks Class - Background 2

i

EDIT: Finally got around to some Cheeks suggestions! This one had some minor tweaks, so I included a before and after. The cliff on the left was given some more height, and a lot of grass in the foreground to make the depth more obvious. Also, decided to push the sky and clouds a little bit greener. This is an alien planet, afterall, and I felt like the first one looked a little too much like earth. ORGANIC BACKGROUND. So I'm submitting this here a bit early. I really didn't know how to approach this one as my Star Wars story doesn't really have any all-organic backgrounds....but I did a study of a field on Muunilist. Here it is....Be gentle! Cheeks Class - Background 3

i

ORGANIC + INORGANIC BACKGROUND. So I'm submitting this here a bit early. For better or for worse, here's my third background. I'm not crazy about the execution, but I like the colors, and the concept. Hopefully Cheeks can steer me in the right direction for this one!
